Former
Brazilian football star Ronaldinho was granted house arrest in Paraguay after
allegedly entering the country with false documents.
Along
with his brother Robert, the Paraguayan National Police arrested the former
Barcelona striker on 4 March.
The
Prosecutor's Office said that officials had found various documents, including
ID cards and Paraguay passports, in the names of the men.
The
two men, who were being held in a prison in Asuncion, appeared in court via
video conference on Tuesday.
Judge
Gustavo Amarilla announced the verdict, explaining that each man paid a bond of
$ 800,000.
The
two men will remain in a hotel in the Paraguayan capital while they are still
under investigation.
The
verdict was broadcast live on by Paraguay media.
Authorities
claimed that Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, also known as "Ronaldinho",
was using original passports containing false content.
Prosecutors
said in a statement posted on Facebook that the documents were found during the
search in the sports star wing of the Yacht Hotel and Golf Club in Lampari,
near the Paraguayan capital Asuncion.
Authorities
said that in order to obtain a Paraguay passport, a person must live for a
certain period of time in the country.
"Ronaldinho
and his brother entered the country at 9.05 am on a commercial flight that
landed at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport. They entered using an
original Paraguay passport but it contained false information," Prosecutor
Federico Delfino said in a Facebook post at the time. .
"We
now know that these passport numbers belong to other people. They are real
passports but with false details. It was issued in January 2020, and the ID
cards, which were given to them on arrival, in December."
Paraguayan
authorities believed that their Brazilian counterparts had taken away Brazilian
brother's passports before due to financial problems - but they were told that
in fact the documents were returned to them in October 2019.
The
Paraguayan Public Prosecutor's Office told CNNE that Brazilian counterparts
said that the two men left their country with real Brazilian passports.
